SUMMARY:Sixth Annual SoCal Ecosystem Leadership Forum
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Alliance for SoCal Innovation\n\n\n\nDriving economic development in our diverse SoCal communities through industry/sector selection and alignment\, targeted program development\, business incentives\, and brand building. \n\n\n\n\n\nLong Beach\, CA \n\n\n\nEvent Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Overview \n\n\n\nThis annual strategic planning workshop is focused on uniting and catalyzing the leadership of Southern California’s diverse and compelling innovation nodes which define the SoCal innovation network. To accomplish this\, we convene a diverse cross section of leaders from across the region for a facilitated workshop to generate a shared understanding of innovation-focused economic development opportunities\, challenges\, and best practices in the region. \n\n\n\nThis year’s focus \n\n\n\nThis year we will explore strategies and best practices for driving innovation-based economic development in our diverse SoCal communities through presentations\, city-specific case studies and group discussions where we’ll identify and discuss best practices around industry/sector selection and alignment\, targeted program development\, business incentives\, and brand building. \n\n\n\nThe primary audience will be representatives from SoCal ecosystem-focused organizations such as economic development agencies\, accelerators\, regional and industry-specific startup support organizations\, and local and state government agencies. \n\n\n\nWhy are we doing this? \n\n\n\nThere are common challenges and opportunities that unite the often fragmented\, geographically dispersed hubs of innovation throughout Southern California. Our analysis of the region\, in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group\, has revealed that there is little coordination among these compelling pockets of innovation to address common issues. However\, the Alliance believes aligning best practices\, external messaging\, and delivery of services and resources are necessary to harness the collective potential of the region’s innovation assets to make Southern California the next great innovation ecosystem. \n\n\n\nForum Goals\n\n\n\n\nConnect the key people and organizations working to drive economic development and prosperity within SoCal’s innovation ecosystem\n\n\n\nIdentify trends and best practices that drive innovation-based economic development initiatives\n\n\n\nInstigate and support deeper relationships between SoCal’s innovation ecosystem leaders to ensure improved coordination of effort and collaboration within the region\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n Forum Agenda\n \n \n \n 9:30 AM: Informal networking \nCome early for coffee and refreshments while you (re)connect with colleagues. \n10:00a: Welcome + State of the Region report \n10:20a: Rapid Introductions. Let’s see who’s in the room. \n10:50a: Conversation Round 1. Where We’re At – Current Landscape and Opportunities for the Region. \nLet’s set the table for the rest of the day’s discussions by getting up to speed on regional economic development priorities and initiatives through presentations and discussion. \nSpeakers: \nModerator: Stacy Cumberbatch\, Managing Director at Blended Impact \nChris Earl\, Acting Deputy Director & So Cal Regional Advisor at Go-Biz CalOSBA \nMatt Horton\, VP of Policy and Research at LAEDC \nJennifer McLain Hiramoto\, Chair at CALED and Director of Economic Development at City of Ontario \n12:00p: Lunch Break \n12:30p: Conversation Round 2. Going Vertical: Selecting and Developing Industry Specialization. \nPresentations and interactive group discussion on best practices for industry/sector selection and alignment\, effective stakeholder collaboration\, targeted program development\, business incentives\, messaging and brand building. \nIndustry Deep Dives: \nModerated by John Keisler\, CEO & Managing Partner at Sunstone Management \nCleantech/Bluetech: Jenny Krusoe\, Chief Operations Officer and EVP at AltaSea + Michael Galvin\, Director of Waterfront & Commercial Real Estate at Port of LA) \nLife Science: Dan Gober\, Executive Director\, Los Angeles at Biocom + Howard Kozloff\, Founder & CEO at Noblespace + Gunjan Siroya\, Chief Solutions Officer at Larta Institute \nAerospace & Defense: Chris Pimentel\, Mayor Pro Tem at City of El Segundo + Lucius Martin\, Deputy Mayor at City of Long Beach + Drew “Murph” Busbee\, COO at DTI \n1:45p: Conversation Round 3. Getting it Done: How Cities Invest in Innovation \nModerated chats with city representatives who are driving innovation-based economic development initiatives that reflect a range of complex strategic decision making\, collaboration and overcoming pragmatic challenges. \nGlendale expands beyond Hollywood to support startup innovation: David Crawley Delgado\, Senior Economic Development Coordinator at City of Glendale + Neal Bloom\, Managing Partner at Rising Tide Partners and Interlock Capital \nPasadena’s path to build leading Biotech + Deep Tech hubs: Felicia Williams\, Councilperson at City of Pasadena + Mike Schaffer\, CEO at Echo Factory + Patrick Church\, Managing Director at JLL Los Angeles + Andy Wilson\, CEO at Alliance for SoCal Innovation and former Councilperson at City of Pasadena \n2:30p: Wrap Up \n3:00p: Networking and Refreshments

SUMMARY:The 5th Annual SoCal Ecosystem Leadership Forum
DESCRIPTION:Our annual regional planning workshop is focused on uniting and catalyzing the leadership of Southern California’s diverse and compelling innovation nodes which define the SoCal innovation network. To accomplish this\, we will convene a diverse cross section of leaders from across the region for a professionally facilitated one-day intensive workshop to learn\, share best practices\, connect with key partners and generate a coordinated strategy to tackle shared challenges and opportunities. This event is invite-only and free of charge\, thanks to our sponsors Hines\, Verizon\, Sunstone Management\, and Annenberg Tech | The Annenberg Foundation. \n\n\n\nThis year’s forum is focused on making SoCal more competitive — nationally and within California — in attracting investment through public and private funding sources. The primary audience for the discussions will be representatives from SoCal ecosystem-focused organizations such as economic development agencies\, accelerators\, regional and industry-specific startup support organizations\, as well as local\, state\, and federal government agencies who fund economic development. \n\n\n\nForum Goals:\n\n\n\n\nConnect the key people and organizations working to drive economic development and prosperity within SoCal’s innovation ecosystem\n\n\n\n\n\nIdentify trends and available opportunities to fund economic development initiatives so that ecosystem stakeholders can best prepare and align resources to capitalize on the appropriate funding sources for their communities\n\n\n\nInstigate and support deeper relationships between SoCal’s innovation ecosystem leaders to ensure improved coordination of effort and collaboration within the region\n\n\n\n\nAgenda:\n\n\n\n9:00 AM: Informal networking \n\n\n\nCome early for coffee and refreshments while you (re)connect with colleagues. \n\n\n\n10:00 AM: Welcome \n\n\n\nKicking off the day with comments from Alliance staff and welcome from Doug Holte\, CEO at EXP by Hines\, our host and venue sponsor. \n\n\n\n10:15: Introductions: Who’s in the room? \n\n\n\nEach attendee will share a quick (10 second) summary of your organization and the role you play in the ecosystem. Roles could include: Investor\, Government\, Ecosystem Support Org\, Corporate\, Academic Institution\, Service Provider (e.g. Banking\, Legal\, Accounting). \n\n\n\nLed by our emcee and program facilitator\, Juan Ceva \n\n\n\n10:30a: Conversation Round 1. Funding Economic Development. Sponsored by Verizon \n\n\n\nWhat economic development priorities are getting funding\, and how can the SoCal ecosystem best prepare? Panel discussion with regional funders featuring representatives from government agencies and philanthropic foundations where we will learn about upcoming funding opportunities\, debrief about past experiences\, and gain insights into the evolving trends for funding economic development programs.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Wilfred Marshall (US Economic Development Administration)\, Deepak Bahl (USC Center for Economic Development)\, Chris Earl (CA GO BIZ)\, Shaun Randolph (LA N Sync / California Community Foundation)\, Stephanie Holloway (LA County). We’ll identify the key initiatives (e.g. grants\, PPPs)\, essential organizations to include in those initiatives\, and how we can proactively utilize (or forge) alliances and effective partnerships to best accomplish our regional funding goals. \n\n\n\n2:30p: Wrap Up Discussion: summarizing the day and forging a plan for next steps and action. \n\n\n\n3:00p: Program concludes
